Pitched or flat: which roof have you got?
Most houses have a pitched roof: two or more sloping sides covered in clay or concrete tiles, or natural slate. They shed water quickly and, when the battens and underlay are sound, they last for decades. When a pitched roof starts losing tiles every winter or the underlay has perished, a full strip and re-cover is usually better value than chasing leaks. Our page on new roofs and re-roofs explains how that job runs from scaffold to final clean.
Flat roofs are common on rear extensions, garages, dormers and bay windows. Old felt tends to crack, blister and pond water. We replace it with GRP fibreglass or EPDM rubber, both of which suit most domestic flat roofs. Read more on flat roofing, including how we choose between the two.
If you are not sure which you need, that is fine. Lee, who runs the business, will look at the roof, tell you plainly what condition it is in and put the options in writing.
Chimneys, leadwork and roof windows
A lot of leaks start around the details rather than the tiles themselves. Chimney stacks lose pointing, flaunching cracks and pots work loose. We repair, rebuild or take down chimneys depending on what makes sense for the house. Lead flashings around stacks, walls and valleys are dressed and fixed properly so water runs off rather than behind.
We also fit Velux and other roof windows, which bring light into lofts and stairwells. Fitting one well means getting the flashing kit and the tile cuts right, so it stays dry for years.
Roofing often ties in with other jobs. If you are adding an extension or converting a loft, our building services cover the work below the roof as well. You can also look through our recent projects to see the standard we work to.
