What goes into each job
The kinds of roof we work on
Pitched roofs
A new pitched roof means stripping the old tiles, battens and felt back to the rafters, fitting a breathable membrane and new battens, then laying the tiles with the ridge and hips fixed mechanically. See how the job runs on our new roofs page.
Flat roofs
Flat roofs on extensions and garages are stripped back to the deck, any rotten boards are replaced and a new GRP or EPDM covering is laid, with trims and upstands detailed to keep water out. More on flat roofing.
Slate roofs
Natural slate is heavy, long-lasting and unforgiving of poor fixing. Each slate is holed and nailed or hooked to a consistent gauge, and valleys and abutments need careful cutting. Our roofing page covers slate alongside tiles.
Dormer roofs
Dormers combine a small flat or pitched roof with cheeks and leadwork where they meet the main slope, so there are plenty of places for water to get in if it is rushed. Renewing one is often part of a wider re-roof.
Roof windows
Fitting a Velux or similar roof window involves trimming the rafters, fitting the frame and flashing kit, and cutting the surrounding tiles neatly so the window sits flush. It is listed with our other roofing services.
Membrane roofs
Single-ply rubber membranes such as EPDM are laid in one large sheet where possible, which keeps joins to a minimum on a flat roof. We explain the pros and cons against GRP on our flat roofing page.
Tile replacement
Where only part of a roof is affected, slipped or cracked tiles can be replaced and matched as closely as possible to what is already there. That work sits within our roof repairs.
Ridge work
Ridge tiles bedded in old mortar loosen over time and can blow off in a storm. We rebed or dry-fix them so they stay put. It is one of the most common roof repairs we carry out.
