Covering Southend-on-Sea and nearby
From Witham we head south via the A130 and A127 to reach Southend-on-Sea, and we cover the town along with Leigh-on-Sea, Westcliff and the surrounding area. The housing here ranges from tall Victorian and Edwardian houses near the seafront to bungalows and inter-war semis further back, plus plenty of newer homes.
Whatever the house, Lee Draper oversees the job himself, from the first look at the roof to the final check.
Coastal weather and your roof
Being close to the estuary means more exposure to wind and driving rain than towns further inland. Over time, gusts can lift and loosen tiles, particularly at the edges and along the ridge. Mortar on ridges and verges takes a battering, and lead flashing can work loose where it meets walls or dormers.
The signs to watch for include tiles on the ground after a windy night, gaps visible along the ridge line, and damp patches appearing high up on bedroom walls or ceilings. Spotting these early usually keeps the repair small.
Repairs or a re-roof?
Wind damage can often be repaired without replacing the whole roof. We re-fix or replace lifted tiles, rebed or mechanically fix ridges, and repair or renew lead flashing. Our roof repairs page covers this kind of work in more detail.
If the roof is older and the battens or felt have deteriorated, though, repeated repairs may just keep you busy every winter. In that case, Lee will explain why a re-roof could be better value, and quote for both so you can choose.
Flat roofs on extensions and garages
Garages, rear extensions and bay roofs are common across Southend, and many still have felt coverings that crack and lift in exposed spots. We replace them with EPDM rubber or GRP fibreglass. EPDM is often laid as a single sheet with no joints in the middle, which helps on an exposed roof, while GRP gives a tough, seamless finish.
Find out more about both on our flat roofing page.
Roofline and gutters
Salt air and wind are hard on timber fascias and bargeboards, and gutters can be pulled out of line by heavy storms. We replace roofline boards in low-maintenance uPVC and fit new gutters and downpipes. Have a look at our guttering, fascias and soffits page.
Bungalows, bays and older seafront homes
Southend has a large number of bungalows, where the roof makes up a big part of what you see from the street. A tidy, straight roof line makes a real difference to how the whole house looks, so we take care with ridges, hips and verges.
Older seafront houses bring their own details, such as bay window roofs, dormers and tall gables that catch the wind. Each one needs proper weatherproofing at the junctions. Lee will look at all of these at the site visit, so nothing is missed in the quote and you know exactly what is being done.
If your bungalow has a flat-roofed rear extension or garage as well, we can look at that on the same visit. Pricing everything together means one set of scaffold where it is needed and one clear quote to compare, rather than several separate jobs spread across the year.
