Roofing in Basildon
Basildon was built largely as a new town after the war, and that history shows in its roofs. Whole neighbourhoods were laid out at around the same time, with similar house types, similar roof pitches and similar materials. That means many roofs in the same street tend to reach the end of their life at about the same time.
We cover Basildon and the surrounding area from our base in Witham, and owner Lee Draper oversees every job personally.
Post-war and estate homes: concrete tile re-roofs
Large numbers of Basildon homes were finished with concrete interlocking tiles. They are tough, but after many decades of weather they become porous, lose their surface, grow moss and can crack. Under them, the original felt may have become brittle or torn, and the battens can be past their best.
When that happens, a re-roof is usually more sensible than replacing tiles one at a time. We strip the old covering, check the timbers, fit a modern breathable membrane and new battens, and re-tile. Our new roofs page sets out each stage. On terraces and estates, we take care to tie the new roof in tidily with the neighbouring properties.
Flat roofs on garages, porches and extensions
Block garages, front porches and later rear extensions are a big part of the Basildon streetscape, and almost all have flat roofs. Many still carry felt that has split, blistered or started to pond. We replace them in GRP fibreglass or EPDM rubber, and replace the deck underneath where it has softened.
Porches are small, but the joint with the house wall is easy to get wrong. We pay particular attention there. More detail is on our flat roofing page.
Repairs and leadwork
Not every roof needs replacing. Slipped tiles, loose ridges, leaks around flashings and storm damage can usually be repaired. Lead flashing where roofs meet walls, porches and dormers is a common weak point and one we repair or renew regularly. Our roof repairs page explains what we do.
Roof windows and dormers
Plenty of Basildon owners are making more of their loft space. We fit roof windows and work on dormer roofs, and if you are already planning a re-roof, adding roof windows at the same time is far easier while the roof is open and the scaffold is up.
Streets with matching roofs
Because so many Basildon homes share the same design, a new roof needs to sit comfortably alongside the neighbours. Where possible, we will talk through tile options that keep your house in keeping with the rest of the street, whilst still giving you a modern, weathertight roof underneath.
On linked and terraced houses, the joins between your roof and the next one need careful finishing. We take time to make those junctions neat and watertight, so the work looks right and keeps water out for years.
If several households on the same row are thinking about new roofs, Lee is happy to visit each of them and talk through the options. Every quote is still written for the individual house, based on what he actually finds on that roof.
How quotes work
Every quote starts with a free site visit. Lee comes out during the working week, Monday to Friday between 8am and 5pm, looks at the roof and explains what he has found. You then receive a written quote setting out the work and the materials, so you know exactly what is included.
There is no hard sell and no obligation. Call Lee on 07947 758052 or get in touch online to arrange a visit.
